CONTROL OF TRUSTS

> PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT’S DECLARATION EMPLOYMENT AND LIVING STANDARDS. GREAT DECLINE IN SIX MONTHS. By Telegraph. —Press Association, Copyright. WASHINGTON, April 29. In his message to Congress asking for additional funds for a comprehensive study of anti-trust problems and an expanded enforcement of the present trust laws, President Roosevelt said: “Unhappy events abroad have taught us two simple truths about the liberty of a democratic people: Firstly, democracy’s liberty is unsafe if people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the State itself; secondly, it is unsafe if the business system does not provide employment and does not produce and distribute goods in such a way as to sustain an acceptable standard of living.” He added that both lessons hit home. Mr Roosevelt cited statistics for 1935/36 showing that 47 per cent of all families and individuals living alone had incomes of below 1000 dollars yearly. Mr Harry L. Hopkins, Federal relief administrator, said the national income had decreased by twelve billion dollars in six months. Three million men had been thrown- out of work. He expressed the opinion that the decline was the fastest in history. OCEAN TRIP. PRESIDENT GOES SOUTH ON CRUISER. CHARLESTON, April 30. President Roosevelt sailed aboard the cruiser Philadelphia on an ocean vacation, which may take him as far south as the West Indies. The destroyer Fanning accompanied the Philadelphia for the purpose of acting as communication vessel. The trip is expected to last five or six days.
