CAREER OF ICING ENDED
(By “The Cynic.”)
The turf career of the Great Northern Oaks winner, Icing, ended after her unsuccessful effort on the second day of the Auckland Easter meeting and she will be sent to the Kaotanui Stud this week.
Icing is an ideal type for breeding purposes as besides good looks she has a most attractive pedigree. Her dam, Aspic, is the only Polymelus mare at stud in New Zealand. Cohesion, by Cyndrian from Aspic, is the dam of Valiant Chief and Heroic Chief. Icing will probably be mated with Posterity.
Mr G. M. Currie’s other two representatives, Relative and Scarf Dance, will also accompany Icing to Kaotanui, where they' will be mated with Ringmaster and Posterity respectively.
Looking bright and healthy, Enge made a fine showing for nine furlongs in the Foley Memorial Handicap. A proved customer in soft going, Enge should be dangerous from now on and every race can be expected to improve his condition.
One more hack hurdle race would place Sporting Song beyond that class. There is little hope, however, of him racing yet awhile as he is being treated for a leg, which gives the appearance that it is very doubtful whether he will be in any events in the next few weeks. Sporting Song has been handicapped for the Egmont meeting and one would like to see him compete as he is very good at his best.
The recent track work of Galilee has been encouraging and she was fancied for the first sprint at Avondale. The fact that she and Tonnerre disputed the lead at a killing pace found both out and Galilee should be given a further chance before being discarded as she looks really well. For the present Bass is being kept at flat racing, but in between times he has been schooled and has done his work in fine style. Bass looks likely to give a good account of himself in the first hurdle race he contests.
Under H. Dulieu's guidance on the
New Plymouth tracks is a yearling full-sister to Wotan, which will race in the same ownership as the Melbourne Cup winner.
Master Brierly overcame the difficulty of a slightly softened track at Ellerslie but on a distinctly heavier track at Avondale the veteran was all at sea. Now that the rainy season is at hand Master Brierly may find it hard to win again. ■
Fiddledine, who was due to make her debut in the Makirikiri Juvenile Handicap at Woodville on Friday, is a chestnut filly by Laughing Prince from the Acre —Kinsem mare Acco, who won a few races some seasons ago. She was bred by Mr K. McK. Duncan from whom she has been bought by Mr E. H. Jones, formerly of Hunterville and now of Waverley. She is trained by H. H. Mills at Hawera.
Arvakur began with his usual dash in the juvenile event at Avondale, but he stopped at the end. Possibly the last has been seen of the Beau Pere youngster this season. He has always been speedy, but is under suspicion for a throat affliction.
Sports Coat, who finished with the bunch in the Makirikiri Juvenile Handicap at Woodville on Friday, was taken over to Sydney by H. E. Russell in the spring but was not raced. He is a bay colt by Pink Coat from the Clarenceux mare Jarretiere, halfsister to Battle Knight (winner of 21 races), and he was bought by Russell as a yearling for 200 guineas.
The well-reputed Coronation ran promisingly in his two first races at Hastings last month, but he failed to run on in the Makirikiri Juvenile event at Woodville on Friday. He is a brown colt by Limond from the imported mare Jewel of Asia, thus being a full-brother to Sir John (V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes) and Farmer, and he is being raced by Mr W. H. Gaisford, the Dannevirke vice-presi-dent.
“it’s an ill-wind that blows nobody any good” is an old-time saying that receives an apt illustration in the Australian Jockey Club’s St. Leger this year. Avenger (A.J.C. Derby), Hua (Victoria Derby) and Courtcraft (Great Northern Derby) being out of commission and Ajax being withdrawn, the unusual spectacle is presented in that none .of the horses engaged has been placed in a classic event. The colt engaged with most form to recommend him to notice is John Wilkes, by . Baralong—Golden Cello, who is owned by the Melbourne sportsman who races under the assumed name of “G. Ornong.”
Bourbon, a colt by Tippler from the Spearhead mare Spearfoot, is credited with carrying the look of a stayer, and, with three strains of Musket in his pedigree, much may be expected from him, viewed from a breeding standpoint.
The demand for the stock of Melfort at the Sydney sales is not surprising, as last year, when the Colorado sire's first progeny were offered, they brought exceptional prices, three of the lots fetching four figures and the colt out of Regal Fleur being second top price of the sales at 1550 guineas. This figure, however, has been well eclipsed by the 2800 guineas paid for the Lalaguli colt last week by Mr F. Dalton.
A Melfort—Lalaguli colt was second best price for the Melforts last year, being secured by Mr E. E. D. Clarke at 1300 guineas. Racing as Liana, he has already won the V.A.T.C. Federal Stakes. The Regal Fleur colt was named Fort Regal, and has been a winner at Williamstown. Best of all the first crop, however, is Loombah, retained by his breeder, and winner at his only two outings to date, one of them by eight lengths and the other being a dead-heat with Bonheur de Pere.
Lalaguli, the dam of the 2800 guineas colt, is by Tressady (sire of the dam of Manfred, Runnymede, etc.), out of the Cooltrim mare Waianui, descending from the same family as Cider (A.J.C. 'Derby) and Apple Pie (second in Caulfield and Australian Cups and third ..in the Melbourne Cup). She is at Mr H. A. Taylor's Macquarie stud, and is proving a gold mine in this sphere, though she won only a maiden event herself on the Turf.
Miss Dorothy Paget has repeatedly paid high prices for yearlings in the hope of winning an English Derby, but she has not yet been able to get near success in that race. Now she is turning her attention to something of less importance, and recently nominated four horses for the Northolt Pony Derby, of £l,OOO. There are 49 entries.
Gay Rose, who narrowly beat Francis Drake in the Foley Memorial Handicap on the opening day of the Avondale Meeting, is a seven-year-old mare by Gay Shield from Autumn Rose, by Soult. Gay Rose has done a lot of racing this season, having started 18 times for three wins, a second, and two thirds. She is one of the best mudlarks racing in the Auckland province, and should do well during the winter meetings.
High Star put up a good performance in winning the Avondale Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, in" 3 min. 18 3-ssecs. on a holding track on the opening day of the Avondale Meeting. He is a six-year-old gelding by The Ace from Star Attraction, and scored his third win this season out of eight starts. High Star led all the way and was easing up at the finish. Star Attraction, by Adjutant, traces back to a family noted for stamina, and High Star is likely to do well in the big hurdle races to be decided this winter. DANNEVIRKE RACES HARTGILL TO SLIPPERY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WOODVILLE, May 1. Although the annual meeting of the Dannevirke Racing Club at Woodville was again favoured by a fine day for its conclusion on Saturday, the track was even heavier than on the first day, due to exceptionally heavy rain during the night. There was a good attendance. The totalisator turnover was again slightly below that of the corresponding day last year, £9382 10s, compared with £10,529. The total for the two days was £16,582, against £19,901, a decrease of £3319. Results: — Tipapakuku Steeplechase, two miles and a quarter.—3 Southern Blood, 9.10 (I. Rohloff), 1; 4 Given, 9.7 J (A.
