The long train had come to a halt at a wayside station when an official popped his head into a first-class compartment and barked “put out that pipe! This ain’t a smoking-kerridge. Nothing wrong with my eyesight’’ The official glared—but suddenly smiled, said “Thank you, Sir!” and passed on.
