HARRIERS

MASTERTON CLUB OPENING RUN OF SEASON The Masterton Harrier Club held its opening run of the season from the Park Oval on Saturday under ideal harrier conditions. At 2.30 p.m.’ the athletes were lined up for Mr S. V. Gooding to start them off for a run round one lap of the club’s championship course. Owing to the recent rains, running conditions near the river were of an adverse nature, the low-lying ground being flooded at various places. When Faulknor’s bowser station was reached the runners lined up for a run back to the pavilion, and G. Gregory, G. Sutherland and C. K. Long distinguished themselves by finishing in that order. The juniors, under D. Cairns, had a run over a similar, but shorter course, and in a run home Gilbert and D. Cairns were first and second, respectively After the runs the members adjourned to the Municipal Social Hall, where afternoon tea was served, new members welcomed, apologies received and well-wishers’ telegrams read.

In officially declaring the season open, Mr S. V. Gooding stated how pleased he was to be present, as an old member of the club, to perform such a pleasing duty. Mr Gooding remarked on the bareness of the trophy cupboard, and stated that this could only be remedied by hard training and a real team spirit. The club captain, C. K. Long, reminded members of the Field Day in conjunction with the club’s 26th anniversary on May 14. He also endorsed Mr Gooding’s remarks by stating that to regain lost trophies harriers must take their preparations seriously. With a schedule supplied by A. L. Fitch, training is to be carried out on the Park Oval four night? a week from now on. Mr .Long spoke of the good work done by the Ladies’ Committee ably led by Mrs R. Gully. Messrs G. Sykes and J. J. Hunter also spoke on the popularity of harrierism, and expressed good wishes for a successful season. Mr R. Gully was an efficient chairman. A dance was held in the evening in the Municipal Hall, when a most enjoyable time was spent, the function being a decided success. KIATERE CLUB. FALLOON LEADS RUNNERS HOME, About twenty runners attended the weekly run of the Kiatere Harrier Club held on Saturday from the Solway Showgrounds. The runners were divided into packs and started at five minute intervals. The course followed was over five miles, and embraced a good variety of country. ■ The weather conditions were ideal, and despite the heavy going, members maintained a steady pace throughout. Basil Falloon showed good form to lead the field home by a comfortable margin followed by D. Nelson and A. Colway.

The junior members had a light training run over 2J miles.
