BASKETBALL

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION TOURNAMENT. The Wairarapa Basketball Association’s tournament was held on Saturday on the Wairarapa College grounds in fine but very windy weather. There was a good attendance, seventeen teams taking part in the tournament. The A grade resulted in a win for Wairarapa College I. and the B grade was won by Hospital. The winning teams were as follow: — Wairarapa College. Forwards: J. Gemmell, I’. Baskiville, I. Dale. Centres: R. Edwards, V. Hendry, M. McLaren. Defenders: M. Carroll, C. Shearer, E. McLaren. Hospital. Forwards: P. Mitchell, N. Pearson, M. Fox. Centres: P. Holmes, M. Whitton leapt), M. Cunningham. Defenders: M. Honore, E. Marvin, A. Bilby. The following are the results: — A Grade. First round: Stars I. beat Wairarapa College 11., 14/1; High School Old Girls beat lona, 5/1. Second round: Stars I. beat High School Old Girls I, 7/6; Wairarapa College I. beat Technical Old Girls 11., 10/1; High School Old Girls II beat Technical Old Girls 1., 8/6; Stars 11. beat Wairarapa College 111., 9/2. Semi-finals: Wairarapa College 1., beat Stars 1., 7/6; Stars 11. beat High School Old Girls 11., 10/6. Final: Wairarapa College 1., beat Stars 11., 13/2. B Grade. j First round: Hospital beat Wairarapa College IV., 6/0; lona beat Wairarapa College 11., 8/1; Stars beat Wairarapa College HI., 3/2. Semi-finals: Hospital beat lona, 4/3; Wairarapa College 1., beat Stars, 5/1. Final: Hospital beat Wairarapa College I, 4/2. In the A grade the best game was the Stars I. v. High School Old Girls 1., a very close struggle, spoilt by high wind. Stars indulged in far too much long passing. In the centre usually one instead of three girls handled the ball. A. Burgess played a strong game as a defender and was very hard to pass. In the centre K. Mouat did good work. The combination in the forwards was not as good as usual in this team, but good throwing was noticed from E. Jones and I. Jackson. For High School Old Girls nearly all the goals came from N. Cohen. L. Renner was as usual a strong defender and the captain, H. Winter, played a good centre game. The Wairarapa College I. v. Stars I. game was very closely contested and in doubt until the last half-minute. Again Stars spoilt their game by long passes and there was a good deal of fumbling and dropping the ball. For College the pivot of the team was R. Edwards whose active play speeded up the whole team. The positional play was good and also the speed. The defenders were not very strong, though E. McLaren was good. Among the forwards P. Baskiville played a very good game. The final between College I. and Stars 11. was not particularly interesting, as the College team was very much the better.

The B grade play was on the whole not as good as usual. There was little combination in the teams and a lamentable lack of sureness in handling the ball. The win of the Hospital team was a popular and well-deserved one. The forwards of the team obviously lack practice and scored their goals often through the poorness of their opponents rather than from any great accuracy. But the team is really a most promising one which should have a very good chance of winning in the B grade. The captain, M. Whitton, was most active in the centre and kept the ball well in her forward third. M. Honore in the defence and P. Mitchell among the forwards played good games. In both grades the rules most commonly broken were those against personal contact and bouncing the ball. Clubs may obtain rule books from the secretary and are asked to make themselves thoroughly familiar with all the rules. Referees for the day were: Misses J. Rayne, D. O’Donnell. P. Kilmister, Taylor, B. Beiliss, A. J. Shelton, O. R. Sutherland, M. Dwyer, B. Venner and R. Edwards. / The thanks of the association are due to these and also to Mrs A. O’Donnell for the donation of a cup for competition in the B grade.
