CARTERTON

ST. MARK’S CHURCH. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the celebration of the Patronal Festival in connection with St. Mark’s Church, Carterton, the Rev J. T. Holland, Vicar of St. John's Church, Featherston, occupied the pulpit. There was a very large congregation which listened with close attention to a stirring address. After the service an adjournment was made to the Parish Hall where the Bible Class girls served supper, and the opportunity was afforded parishioners of meeting the Rev. Mr Holland. FAREWELL GATHERING. A pleasant afternoon was spent at the Carterton District High School teachers room when the staff assembled to farewell Miss B. G. Armstrong, who has resigned from the staff in view of her approaching marriage. Mr D. A. McPherson, in a happy speech, extended the best wishes of the staff, and Miss Armstrong suitably acknowledged the compliment. 7 , Yesterday morning, the staff and pupils of the Carterton School assembled to farewell Miss B. G. Armstrong. On behalf, of the pupils and the staff, Mr D. A. McPherson, headmaster, presented Miss Armstrong with a handsome beaten brass wood box, and cups and saucers. In doing so Mr McPherson conveyed congratulations to Miss Armstrong, although he was regretful to lose her services as a member of the staff. The speaker also expressed the wish that Miss Armstrong would be very happy in her new sphere of life. Miss Armstrong, in replying, thanked the headmaster, staff and children for their kindly greetings and extended to them hearty wishes for a successful year. Musical honours. and hearty cheers concluded a happy function. PRESENTATION OF PICTURE. Yesterday morning, Mr D. A. McPherson, headmaster, presented the picture, “The Boyhood of Raleigh,” to the Carterton School. This picture has been bought in lieu of a cup, and below it the name of the winning sports team is engraved. The first name to be engraved is that of the “Wekas,” who were successful in winning the sports competitions during 1937. The picture will be hung in Form II room, and will pass from room to room during the year.
