EMPHATIC PROTEST

SPANISH NOTE TO BRITAIN. DEPARTURE FROM PRINCIPLE OF IMPARTIALITY. (Recd This Day, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, April 29. The Spanish Government, in a Note to Britain, mentions the deep dismay with which it has received news of an exchange of letters relating to affairs in Spain accompanying the Anglo-Italian Agreement. The Note asserts that Britain has legitimised Italian intervention by implying that the Italians shall remain in Spain until the end of the conflict. “Since this attitude harms incontrovertibly the highest interests of the Spanish State in defence against external aggression, it is difficult to reconcile it with the principles of impartiality and objectivity on which, despite constant protests from the Spanish. Government, Britain has claimed to base its policy regarding Spain since the outbreak of the war,” the Note states, adding that the Spanish Government firmly and energetically protests against this manifestation of injustice.
