WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETING AT KAHUTARA. The Kahutara Women’s Institute met recently when Mrs McKenzie presided. A minute’s silence was observed by all present as a mark of respect for the late Mrs Lepper. Mesdames Welsh and Pope were appointed delegates to the council meeting to be held in Carterton on April 29. Arrangements were made for the Institute’s Birthday. The competitions resulted as follows: —Tomato sauce, Mrs Siemonek, 1; Mrs D. Wilson, 2. Babies’ frock, Mrs Welsh, 1; Mrs George, 2. Blooms, Mrs Welsh, 1; Mrs Graham, 2. Juniors, Date Scones, Miss P. Nickolaison, 1; Miss M. Harvey, 2. Jar of Flowers, Miss M. Corlet, 1; Miss P. Nickolaison, 2. The games competitions arranged by Mesdames Buick and Duffy were won by Miss B. Rendle and Mrs Pope. The hosteses for the afternoon were Mesdames Cob, Morgan, Harvey and Miss B. Rendle. MEETING AT KONINI. The monthly meeting of the Konini Women’s Institute was held on Thursday. A presentation of a pretty flower bowl was made to Mrs Kelly in recognition of her long services as president. The competitions for the month were the three best boiled potatoes in skins (won by Miss Reeves with Mrs Reeves second), and the best programme for six months of the Institute. In the Institute potato competition Miss L. Brown was first with 48J lbs and Miss G. Smith second with 38Jlbs. Mrs Avery and Mrs Mabey were appointed delegates to attend the conference in Carterton. A demonstration on cake icing was given by Mrs Cavanagh and Mrs Thompson. MEETING AT GLADSTONE In spite of the inclement weather nearly all members of the Gladstone Women’s Institute attended the monthly meeting on April 21. Mrs N. McKay was appointed as delegate to the annual general meeting of the Dominion Federation to be held in July. Representatives elected to attend the District Federation meeting in Carterton on April 29, were Mesdames McLaren and Smith. An interesting demonstration of melanyl work was given by Miss Mollie Hart. * In view of her approaching marriage and departure, Miss Groves was presented with a token of esteem. The competitions resulted as follows: —Seniors, teatowel, Mrs McLaren 1; Mrs Cornish 2; bowl of berries, Mrs Bubb 1, Mrs Cornish 2; Juniors, duchess set, Miss N. Wyeth 1; Miss N. Bubb 2; bloom, Miss J. Palmer 1, Miss N. Wyeth 2.
