MARTINBOROUGH
FOOTBALL MATCH. (“Times-Age” Special.) The football season opened on Saturday with a match, Town versus Country. The weather conditions were anything but favourable, rain falling during the first half of the game. The ball was very greasy and most of the play was confined to the forwards. A forward dribbling rush led by Neil McKay ended in a try being scored by D. Taylor, which was not converted. From a scramble on the Country line J. Quinn secured the ball and evened the scores by touching down in the corner. The kick failed. Town 3, Country 3. In the second half the Town team threw the ball about more than in the first spell and soon increased their scores. J. Arcus added another try for Town. Town 6, Country 3. H. Harley scored a nice try between the posts. Mahapuka converted and the score was: Town 11, Country 3. Two more scores to Town made the score 19 —3. Then B. Habib kicked a penalty goal for Country. A passing rush from halfway, the best piece of play during the game, resulted in P. Martin scoring. The kick failed. Town 19, Country 9. Another try by H. Harley, which Mahapuka converted, brought the match to an end with the score— Town 24, Country 9. Considering the wet ground and greasy ball a very interesting game was witnessed. PERSONALS.
