COSTLY FIRE

FACTORY DESTROYED IN ASHBURTON. By Telegraph. —Press Association, ASHBURTON, April 26. Damage estimated at £ll,OOO was caused by a fire which destroyed the Te Kau knitwear factory at Allenton, owned by Mr F. H. Mclntosh, early on Sunday morning. The origin of the fire is unknown. When Mr Mclntosh, whose house is only nine feet away, was awakened the factory was a mass of flames, the brigade having difficulty in saving the residence, which was only scorched. The factory was a large single-storey wooden building and contained valuable machinery and a full stock of yarn and manufactured goods. Only a tangled mass of machinery and roofing iron is left. It is thought that the fire started in a bakehouse at the rear. About forty girls are thrown idle.

There are insurances on the plant and machinery of £5224, on the stock of £4OOO, and on the building £9OO, all in the Phoenix Office.
