CHILDREN’S SHOES
STATEMENT BY MINISTER REPLY TO RETAILERS “I have no hesitation in again warning the public to beware of paying increased prices for children’s footwear, sizes 0-9,” said the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon D. G. Sullivan, in a statement issued on Saturday. Mr Sullivan said the reports on footwear appearing in the Press of the Dominion had just been brought to his notice. “That such reports as are made by the president of the Wellington Drapers’, Clothiers’, Mercers’, and Footwear Retailers’ Association are founded on incorrect premises is proved conclusively by the fact that a prominent footwear manufacturer in the Dominion is today quoting prices considerably below those charged last year,” said the Minister. "Reductions notified are as follows:—Children’s patent shoes, sizes 10-13, Is a pair; child- • ren’s chrome shoes, Is 5d a pair; boys’ heavy chrome shoes, Is lid a pair; men’s chrome welts, 2s a pair; a line of sandals previously imported and now manufactured in New Zealand 9d a pair. These reductions in wholesale prices range from 12 to 20 per cent, on last year’s prices and will mean, of course, even greater decreases in retail prices.” Mr Sullivan reiterated his previous statement that the duty on children’s shoes, sizes 0-9, had not been increased; they had been, and were .still, imported duty free.
