A.J.C. MEETING
AJAX SCORES IN CROPPER PLATE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. SYDNEY, April 24. The Australian Jockey Club’s meetious weather, but the track was slighting at Randwick concluded in glorly dead following rain on Thursday and Friday. The New Zealand representation was small. Gold Rod in the Cropper Plate was a bad last. It was only for the first 20 yards that he showed any speed, giving his trainer and jockey a complete surprise. Gold Rod does not race at his best when the ground is even slightly wet, but something more than that is necessary to explain his failure.
Ajqx had this race in hand almost from the start. He had the measure of Pandava all the way and could have won by a greater margin had he wished.
Allunga’s display in the A.J.C. Plate was disappointing. He enjoyed the run of the race from the start, but could not produce a finishing run to beat Old Rowley, who was ridden
hard all the way down the straight to hold the lead he gained earlier. Allunga tired, however, a furlong from home.
Gay Knight won the Dangar Handicap under great difficulties, as his saddle slipped nearly half a mile from the post. The jockey, Harvey, had great difficulty in keeping his balance. Results: —
Rous Handicap, seven furlongs.-— Beechwood (Bartie), 1; Rosante, 2; Denis, 3. Eighteen started, including Deputy Ruler. Two lengths; half a length. Time, 1.271. Salt spray has been affecting the insulators on some of the Hawke’s Bay Power Board's lines, according to a report of the chief engineer (Mr H. L. Benjamin) to the board meeting recently. “'Trouble has been experienced on the Napier feeders and all lines near the coast, due to salt spray,” the report states. “The main lines have been patrolled and inspected, and appear to be in good order.”
