PRICES DOWN

TODAY’S WOOL SALE IN WELLINGTON COMPARISON WITH MARCH RATES REPORTS BY BROKERS (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. l Messrs Levin and Co. report:— The fifth and final sale of the 1937-38 wool season was held in the Town Hall today, when catalogues totalling approximately 18,000 bales were submitted to a full bench of buyers representing all sections of both the Home and Continental trade. Competition was general and well sustained, and of our catalogue of approximately 5000 bales, 90 per cent was sold under the hammer. Considering the lateness of the season, our catalogue consisted of quite a good selection of crossbred which opened up rather attractively. Growers present who were interested in the sale of our “Kaiwarra” brands of binned wool must have been very satisfied with the eagerness shown by the buyers to secure these wools, and throughout the season they have realised excellent prices and fully warranted the extra expense incurred. Halfbreds and merinos, on the contrary, were mostly late shorn and unattractive. Lambs wool was in plentiful supply and evidently in excess of the demand, consequently prices were somewhat disappointing.

Bradford and the Continent were again the mainstay of the market, Japanese and American competition being restricted. Australian representatives were bidding freely for any good style crossbreds. As compared with our March sale we record the following changes:— Merinos and halfbreds, id per lb lower; fine medium and coarse crossbreds, Jd to id lower; hoggets, on a par; lambs, id to Id per lb lower; pieces, on a par; bellies, Jd to id per lb lower.
