A substantial increase over the first quarter of last year in the number of criminal cases heard in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, is shown in the returns for the quarter ended March 31, 1938. The total for this quarter was 1907, compared with 1543 for the" same period last year, an increase of approximately 23.6 per cent. Though the same number of girls appeared in the Children’s Court, the number of boys showed a decrease of 17. Motor Re-licencing. The latest compilation of motorvehicle licence figures prepared by the Transport Division of the Post Office shows what a formidable task faces this Department next month when the re-licencing process will begin, the new plates having to be used on June 1. These figures, which include all registrations up till March 31. show that there are 278,350 motor vehicles on the register, and as the registrations since that date have been well maintained, it can be assumed that that the licences to be issued from May 2 will exceed 282,000. Law and Press. “Linked with the Press we can do anything,” said the president, Mr H. F. O’Leary, K.C., when a civic reception was accorded to the delegates to the conference of the New Zealand Law Society at Christchurch yesterday. He was referring to the important part played by the legal profession and the Press in defending the rights and liberties of the people. “Perhaps journalism is ahead of us in defending the liberties and rights of the people, because it has wider opportunities,” Mr O'Leary said. “In any case, we at all times are anxious to preserve the rights and liberties of the people of New Zealand.
