NEED OF DEFENDING FOREIGN COMMERCE
Senate Committee’s Warning
ACTION BEYOND AIRCRAFT RANGE

The Senate Naval Affairs Committee, reporting on the Naval Bill, warned the United States that it “can be defeated and conquered without a military conquest. , . “An effective blockade against our foreign commerce can be estaolished and maintained at points thousands of miles from our coasts and well beyond aircraft range.” The report therefore stresses the necessity for a navy capable of of controlling the sea areas.
A message dated April 15 stated that the naval committee of the Senate reported favourably on the Naval Expansion Bill. After authorising an increase in battleship tonnage providing for three 45,000ton ships, the committee increased the number of auxiliary vessels iiom 22 to 26 and struck out a proposal of 3,000,000 dollars for the construction of a dirigible.
