By Telegraph. —Press Association, PALMERSTON N., April 19. Pax Smith, the third member of a notable Auckland golfing family, won his first major championship title today by a meritorious win of 3 and 2 over J. P. Hornabrook, New Zealand open champion, in the final of the North Island amateur championship at Hokowhitu, Palmerston North. The match was played under ideal conditions. Although Hornabrook was not up to form, Smith's victory was none the less deserved.. Smith established an early advantage and refused to allow Hornabrook to take the lead at any stage, upsetting his opponent’s confidence, and it was this factor as much as anything that brought about Hornabrook’s downfall.

Judged from the point of view of scores the match did not produce golf of as high a class as in the semi-finals, but the tension throughout today's game was directly responsible for lapses on the part of both finalists. Strange to say it was Hornabrook, veteran of many championships, who cracked up. and, while Smith, who is scarcely 21 years of age. also felt the strain at times, he proved he had the correct golfing temperament by his comparative coolness. High handicap golfers who followed the match must have taken heart after seeing champions so often in bunkers, but except in a few instances the finalists were able to retrieve their positions without undue penalty. It was in putting that weaknesses were noticeable, and though both on occasions putted well, all too often three putts were needed. Another striking feature of the game was the frequency with which the two balls lay close to each other after drives and seconds. By playing for stymies Smith prevented Hornabrook from winning at the tenth in the morning round and at the thirteenth in the afternoon. PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP. FINAL WON BY HORNE. By Telegraph—Press Association, WELLINGTON. April 19. W. G. Horne, champion of the Hutt club, by beating J. B. Parker (Wellington) by 2 up in the final, won the Wellington provincial amateur championship for 1938 on the Wellington club's links this afternoon. The Hutt player thoroughly deserved the title, as he played most consistently throughout the tournament and must be recognised as one of the finest iron players in the Dominion. A dense fug prevailed early yestcr-

day morning. when the semi-finals were played, but the sun soon dispersed the mist and the day turned out to be almost too warm for golf.
