EXCITING CHASE
AFTER MENTAL HOSPITAL ’ PATIENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. HASTINGS, April 15. •* Travelling at a speed estimated at up to 80 miles an hour, a man who escaped from the Porirua Mental Hospital and who afterwards converted a motor-car at Palmerston North, eluded Hastings police officers who gave chase in a commandeered taxi late on Wednesday evening. Forced to abandon the car on the Puketitiri Road owing to running out of petrol at an early hour yesterday morning the man was given a lift by a passing motorist and taken to Taradale, where the police were notified. He was taken into custody and later returned to the institution.
