FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

4 ANNUAL MEETING OF COUNCIL ELECTION OF OFFICERS The Masterton Friendly Societies’ Council held its annual meeting last week, Bro. J. Fenton presiding.* Reference was made by several members to the activities of the past year. The secretary presented the annual balance sheet, which showed that the funds of the Society were being well maintained. During the winter months the usual card tournament was held between the lodges, and the M.U.1.0.0.F. team was successful in winning the Shield for 1937. The card teams also journeyed to Eketahuna to compete in a challenge from the Eketahuna lodges, the Eketahuna lodge winning by a very small margin of points. The first annual picnic was held at the Solway show grounds, and in spite of the fact that it was postponed twice, there was a good attendance, and a most enjoyable time was spent. On account of being unable to procure a ground, the annual football match was not held.

The eleciij".._of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, Bro H. Swi'.m; vice-president, Bro J. Curry; treasurer, Bro W. McArley; secretary, Bro G. L. Scrivener. Reference was made to the resignationtion of Bro A. E. O’Leary, who found it impossible for him to give his full attention to the work of the council. The resignation was accepted with regret. It was stated by members that the council had lost a very valuable member. For a number of years Bro O’Leary had rendered excellent service on the council. The new committee drew up the programme for the year. It was decided that the tournament would commence on Wednesday, May 18, in the Hibernian Hall and would be continued every Wednesday, instead of Thursday as in previous years. The entrance fee per team was fixed at ss. It was decided to make arrangements for a football match to be played between the town and country lodge on June 23 at Eketahuna, and the secretary was instructed to write to the Eketahuna committee to arrange for the ground, etc. The affiliation to the council was fixed at 5s per lodge. Members intending to,lake part in the football match are asked to hand their names to the secretary as early as possible.
