Publication on Monday. The “Wairarapa Times-Age” will be published on Monday next, April 18. Poppy Day Sales. Thursday was one of the most successful Poppy Days held in Wellington. When counting ceased after 10 p.m. £1291 had been received, with amounts from business houses and distant suburbs still to come. Last year’s total of about £1470 is expected to be exceeded by a small figure. Service of Witness. In spite of the unfavourable weather conditions, there was a large attendance at the Service of United Witness, held last night in the Municipal Hall. The Rev. D. McNeur, president of the Masterton Ministers’ Association, presided, and an inspiring address was given by the Rev. G. V. Pearson. Others taking part were the chairman and the Revs F. Parker and E. J. Rich. St. Matthew’s Church. On Easter Day all communicants of the Church of England join in Holy Communion. Easter celebrations will be observed at St. Matthew’s tomorrow at 6 a.m.. 7 a.m., 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.; at Kuripuni at 9 a.m. and at Upper. Plain at 10 a.m. Festival evensong will be held at St. Matthew’s and at Kuripuni at 7 p.m. Holidays Spoilt by Rain.
The Easter holidays in the Wairarapa have been so far spoilt by the weather conditions. Yesterday heavy rain fell throughout the district, causing flooding of much low-lying country with surface water, and today rain has fallen at intervals. Outdoor sports in Masterton have been in many cases postponed, and in others abandoned altogether.
Labour Party Conference. The annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party will open in the Town Hall, Wellington, on Monday. Delegates will be present from all parts of New Zealand. The day's business includes the address of the president, Mr James Roberts, the presentation of reports and the. setting up of sub-committees to deal with the remits. Tile conference is expected to sit for most of next week. Oil Prospecting Licences.
Approval of the granting of further petroleum prospecting licences is announced by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb. These are:— Nine licences covering a total area of approximately 1355 square miles in the southern portion of the Hawke's Bay Province, to the Shell Company of New Zealand, Ltd. Five licences covering a total area of approximately 1000 square miles in the Taranaki Province, to the New Zealand Petroleum Company, Ltd. Wrestler Returns.
Stating that he was feeling very fit and that he was glad to be home again. “Lofty" Blomfield. New Zealand wrestling champion, returned by the Mariposa. He had given of his best in America, he said, and was confident that had points counted he would have now held the championship of the world. The match with Nagurski was put off three times before the wrestlers finally met. He then found that a college friend of Nagurski had been imported as referee. He had 63 matches in the United States and lost only one, against the Mexican, El Pttlpo, through disqualification.
