Prisoners Build Bridge.
Hundreds of motorists using the Wellington-Auckland main highway were held up between Tongariro National Park and National Park Junction yesterday when a culvert was washed away. Fortunately the railway culvert spanning the same stream was strong enough to withstand the force of the flood water or there would have been even more serious dislocation of holiday traffic. There seemed little likelihood of the road being clear for a considerable time and the holiday plans of possibly a thousand people were endangered, when a gang of prisoners from the Waikune prison camp, in charge of two warders, came to the rescue and in about three hours had built a serviceable temporary bridge across the flooded stream.
Salvation Army Services. The Easter services at the Salvation Army Citadel tomorrow will be conducted by Major Avenell and Major Armstrong from Wellington. These two officers are numbered amongst the veterans of the Army and arc well known for their many years of service. Major Armstrong was in charge of the Army's work amongst the Maoris for many years and speaks the Maori language fluently. A sunrise prayer meeting has been arranged to take place tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. in the Park. The final meeting will take place on Monday night and will take the form of an Easter praise service commencing at 8 o'clock. The special singing of Easter Gospel songs will be features at each service.
