TROUT FISHING
IMPROVEMENT IN DISTRICT RECORDED. ALLOCATIONS OF YEARLINGS. This season promises to be a very busy one for- the Masterton Hatcheries. Preparations are now well underway for the accommodation of 2,250,000 fry. During the next month 15,000 rainbow yearling and 7000 brown trout yearlings will be liberated in the Wellington Acclimatisation Society's area, the allocations being:— Rainbow: Rangitikei River, Hunterville, 5000; Oroua River, Feildin’g, 1000; Pohangina River, Ashhurst, 1000; Lake Williams, Marton, 1000; Rangitikei River. Mangaweka, 2000; Lake Horowhenua, 1000; Whakatikei River, Trentham, 1000; Otaki River, 2000, and Ruakakapatuna Stream, Martinborough, 1000. Brown trout: Pohangina River, 1500; Tokomaru district, 1500: Waikanae River, 1500; Ngaitiawa Stream, 1000; Otaki River, 1500. Fishing in Wairarapa rivers is reported to be better this year than for some time past. The Ruamahanga from Gladstone to Masterton. the Waipoua from the Ruamahanga to Kummer's Bridge, and the Makakahi, Eketahuna, have all fished exceedingingly well, the Waipoua being outstanding. Although some good baskets have been secured from the Mangatariri Stream, Carterton, the fishing there has been patchy. On the whole, fishing in the Wairarapa appears to be improving. Good progress has been made at the Masterton Hatcheries with the construction by local anglers of a pond 100 ft. by 7ft. for the rearing of yearlings for distribution to district rivers. The cost is being met by subscriptions and the anglers are providing the labour free of cost by means of working bees.
