AUTUMN HORSE FAIR
GOOD PRICES FOR HACKS. Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co.. Ltd., report: — We held our Autumn Horse Fair at Hie Colombo Road yards yesterday, when an entry well in excess of advertised numbers was submitted to a big attendance. Heavyhorses met with rather a dragging sale and prices were limited, only the really good sorts eliciting anything like spirited competition. Half draughts were also not in keen demand but hacks met with a veryready' sale, and prices were good. The following are particulars of some of our principal sales: —A/c .1. Judd, draught mare, £3O; a/c T. Moore, Rakaia, draught gelding, £34 10s: draught marc. £25 and £27: a/c E. H. Gray, draught gelding. £27; a/c W. Taylor. 1 .’.-draught mare, £25 10s. Other prices ranged from £2O to £3O. Hacks (good sorts), £l2 to £l6; others, £6 to £9 10s.
The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report having hold their autumn horse sale, when a large entry of horses came forward, which were submitted to a good attendance of buyers. Any good genuine draughts met with a fair sale at prices considerably lower than the spring sales, while aged horses were not wanted. Young half-draughts and spring carters were in good demand and sold well, while hacks, unless something extra good, were neglected.
Following were our principal sales:— A/c. H. McKelvie, 1 3-year unbroken draught mare, £3l 10s: a/c. Gordon Wilson. 1 6-year draught mare, all work, £45: 1 aged draught mare. £25; 1 3-year light draught filly, £27 10s; 1 4-year light draught mare, £23; 1 6year light draught mare, £22 10s; aged spring carters, £B, £9 10s to £10; good hacks, £lO to £l2 10s; aged hacks, £3 to £6; ponies, £5, £6. to £7 10s.
Messrs Dalgety and Co.. Ltd., report: mares, £27, £3O. £3l to £32 10s; 2 At the conclusion of the sheep sale we offered a large entry of draught horses and hacks, there being consignments from several local farmers. Good draughts and young farm horses showing quality- were in demand and made good values. One good 6-year draught gelding, broken to chains, offered on account of Mr F. E. Dorset, made £45, topping the sale for the day. Two-year half-draught fillies and geldings, offered on account of Mr R. W. Sharpe, made up to £29 and £3l. The aged draughts and lighter farm horses met with a slightly easier demand, but the vendors in most cases met the market. Good hacks sold well, there also being quite a good demand for unbroken hacks suitable for hills. We report a good clearance and the following will indicate values:—Heavy draught geldings, £3O, £33, £39 to £45: aged do.. £2O. £23. £25 to £27; aged draught mares. £27, £3O, £3l, to £32 10s;; 2 and 3-year half-draught geldings, broken to lead, £2O, £24, £26 to £29; 2 and 3-year 1 draught fillies, broken to lead, £23, £27 to £3l; 2 and 3-year spring carters. £l5. £l6 to £18; good hill hacks. £lO, £ll. £l2 12s to £l4 10s; aged do., £6, £7 10s to £8 15s; unbroken 3 and 4-year hacks, £4, £4 10s, £5, £5 10s to £7.
