Mrs Cornwallis Orford, a rich American, owns nearly 309 umbrellas, more than anyone else in the world, but is still looking for more. She has a gallery full of umbrellas collected from all over the world for 20 years. She never uses one herself —“too much trouble to carry,” she says. A disease known as citrus canker, which appeared about 12 months ago at Kerikeri and seriously threatened the citrus industry in the district, is now being successfully controlled, according to a statement made by the Hon. AV. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, at a meeting of the Settlers' Association at Kerikeri. It was fortunate that the outbreak had been confined to a small area, said the Minister. As a result of the prompt application of drastic measures by his department, effective control had been established. The treatment —known. as “bare poling”—involved severe cutting back of diseased trees with a consequent loss of crops for three or four years. He hoped that the Government would be able to give some assistance to those who suffered by the application of this method of eradicating the canker.
