TOWN CLERK RESIGNS. At the Borough Council meeting on Monday night, the town clerk tendered his resignation, having accepted an appointment in the Housing Department in Wellington. The council received the resignation with regret. The Mayor paid a high tribute to the work and ability of the town clerk over a period of six years. He always had his work up-to-date, and had been at all times ready and willing to supply any information that was asked for. On behalf of himself and the Council he wished Mr Dopson every success and happiness in his new position. Cr Tripe paid a tribute in connection with the clerk’s work in the library, which institution he had brought up to date.
Mr Dopson suitably acknowledged the good wishes and in connection with the library hoped they would follow out the practice of purchasing new editions of books immediately they were available. The resignation was accepted as at June 1 and Mr Dopson was granted leave of absence as from May 1, in lieu of holidays.
BOROUGH FINANCE. Commenting at the Borough Council meeting on the year’s operations the Mayor stated the general account was' in debit to the extent of about £lOO, which was only £2OO more than the debit of the previous year. In the year’s working extra expenditure had been incurred of about £750 for Tyler’s bridge and approaches and also the swimming baths. He considered the council had put up a record achievement. Some of the interest accounts were showing a debit and there would have to be an adjustment, but it was not anticipated that any increase in the special rates would be necessitated.
