CARTERTON

COMING OF AGE PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special). In the King’s Theatre last night a coming-of-age party was held in honour of Mr Errol Lane, third son of Mr and Mrs E. J. Lane, of Carterton. There was a large attendance and a most enjoyable time was spent. The music for the dancing was provided by the Blue River Dance Band. The large number of presents received testified to the popularity of Mr Lane. The Monte Carlo dance was wonby Miss M. Steffert and Mr J. Yule, of Carterton; the treasure hunt by Miss I. Palmer, of Masterton, and the Lucky Spot dance by Miss Joan Aplin and Mr R. O’Keefe. A PAINFUL ACCIDENT.

A very painful accident befel Mr Martin Parker, of Dalefield, the wellknown Wairarapa footballer, during the progress of a cricket match. Mr Parker was batting when the ball flew off his bat and struck him in the eye. The injury was severe and the eye swelled so rapidly that it was impossible for the ; doctor to determine whether any damage had been done io the pupil itself. This is the second occasion within a few weeks that Mr Parker has received an injury in the same way. SOLOMON ISLANDS VISITOR. Mr Trevor Fairbrother, who is interested in the plantation business atjthe Solomon Islands, was a visitor, to Carterton yesterday. Mr Fairbrother, who is the youngest son of Mrs Fairbrother and the late Mr G. A. Fairbrother, was born 'here and educated at the Carterton School, and his name was included among the scholarship winners in the Jubilee Souvenir published in September last. This is Mr Fairbrother’s first trip to New Zealand for 10 years. DEER STALKERS RETURN. Several Carterton deerstalkers have returned from the Tararua ranges, and report that the stags are roaring well, and conditions are, therefore, favourable for sportsmen. A number of attractive heads have been taken, including 11, 12 and 14 pointers. Further parties are going out during the Easter holidays. OBITUARY. The death occurred yesterday at Tokaanu of Mr. Richard Oates in his 97th year. Deceased, who was many years ago a well-known Carterton district settler, was born in Derbyshire, England, and came out to New Zealand with his parents when quite young. The late Mr Oates was predeceased by his wife, also by his family of one son and a daughter. He also outlived several brothers, and all three sisters. His surviving relatives are his brothers, Messrs J. G. Oates. “Peach Grove,” Parkvale, and Mr Harry Oates, Pembroke Street, Carterton. The latter, with his son, Mr Sidney Oates, left by car yesterday, to attend the funeral which takes place at Tokaanu today. Mr P. M. J. Oates, Taumata, Waihakeke, is another nephew of deceased, and the Misses Oates (2), L. Oates (Parkvale), A. (Oates (Greytown), Mrs C. W. Budd ’(Wellington) and Mrs Herbert Renall ,(Poro Poro) are nieces. DRUIDS’ LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of the Toftara Lodge No. 3, U.A.0.D., was held fin Carterton last night, Bro. O. Braz(endale, A.D., presiding. Included in the (correspondence were letters from four (brothers declaring off the sick fund. Two brothers declared on funds and three brothers forwarded doc(tors certificates advising they were (Still unable to follow their usual occupations. A member advised he was now married and sent the declaration (of his wife. Another brother applied for membersship to the Friendly Societies Association Scheme. Accounts passed for £33 10s lid were passed for payment including a Maternity Bonus of £6, Benevolent grant to member, £2, Hospital payment £1 4s -and sick pay. The Bards reported having visited sick brothers, and advised the progress the members were making. It was decided that on Anzac Day members assemble at the Lodge Room at 10 a.m., and march to the Cenotaph at-Memorial Square, where the District President (Bro. Hector Bassett) will place a wreath in memory of the brothers who fell in the Great War.

Arrangements in connection with the Ball to be held at the King’s Theatre on May 16 were advanced another stage. The following ladies’ committee was set up: Mesdames H. Torrey, F. Groube, O. Brazendale, Herbert Goodin, A. Dew, W. Fryer, H. Bassett, H. Bain, M. Parker S. Gallon, A. Stretton, T. E. Geange, E. Hughes, W. Nielsen, E. McKenzie, Miss I. Oates and E. Jensen. All brothers present were elected a men’s committee with power to add to the number. The secretary, Bro. E. McKenzie was authorised to arrange for an' orchestra, the advertising and general publicity. The prices of admission were fixed at 6s, 4s and 2s 6d respectively. A number of generous donations towards the supper arrangements' were promised by members, including two hams. It was decided the combined committees meet

at the Lodge Room on April 29 to make additional arrangements for the event. BELVEDERE FACTORY YIELD. The milk yield is keeping up well at the Belvedere factory, despite the fact that the season is now well advanced. The mild weather conditions, coupled with the favourable . February rainfall, is, no doubt, responsible for the gratifying result.
