ARMAMENT WORKERS

UNION OFFICIAL’S PROTEST IN BRITAIN MANY SKILLED CRAFTSMEN STILL UNEMPLOYED. OBJECTION TAKEN TO EXPORT SALES. By Telegraph—Press Association. (Recd This Day, 10.25 a.m.) LONDON, April 10. Mr. Fred Smith, secretary of the Amalgamated Engineering Union, has made the following statement: “There is alleged to be a shortage of skilled labour. It is said that emergency measures are necessary. Yet 7197 members of our union are unemployed, besides skilled workers who have sought other occupations. Moreover, we have repeatedly warned employers and the Government that skill and craftsmanship are being allowed to deteriorate. Furthermore, it is illogical to ask for sacrifices of union rules while skilled workers are still employed producing armaments for sale abroad.”
