MARRIAGE SCHOOLS

LIVERPOOL VICAR’S PLANS. MOVE TO STOP DIVORCES. The Rev. Eric Treacy, a 35-year-old Liverpool vicar, plans to establish "marriage” schools to teach young lovers how to solve the problems of married life.

Ignorance is the chief reason for so many romances ending in the divorce court, he says, and he believes that his scheme will defeat ignorance by providing young couples with a skilfully prepared code for living. This code would be drawn up by district panels composed of doctors, clergymen, social workers and psychologists. Mr Treacy, a handsome fair-haired giant, describing his plan this week, said: “A religious and moral scepticism which is paralysing life throughout the world today is probably due to unhappiness in the homes of the people rather than to any intellectual cause.

“Too many young lovers regard marriage as a thrilling romance. When the novelty wears off their adventure they have no foundation left on which to build a happy married life.

“The marriage school would prepare lovers for every aspect of family life. Couples would be advised to attain certain qualifications and standards.”
