FEATHERSTON
WOMEN’S DIVISION ("Times-Age” Special) The annual meeting of the Featherston Branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union which, took place in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Friday afternoon, was presided over by Mrs E. M. Wakely, there being a good attendance of members. Apologies for were received from Mesdames Cole, Ashdown, N. and R. Matthews, and Bockett.
Mrs Still welcomed the president (Mrs Wakely) who had just returned from Auckland. The annual report stated, inter alia: A very successful year was experienced, and our president must feel justly proud that so much success has attended her time of office. The Division can boast of having completed a very full year’s work, with a substantial increase in membership, while under Mrs Wakely’s control. This must be very gratifying to our president, whose only thought is for the Division’s progress. It is worthy of mention that the branch has for its vice-president, the present president for the provincial council, and the branch extends its congratulations to Mrs Clark on her management of such an important office. During the year one of bur members was selected as the recipient of the King's Souvenir Medal, on the occasion of His Majesty’s coronation, and we heartily congratulate Miss Card on her honour, which also brings honour to this branch. To Mrs Q. Donald our thanks are due for her zeal as treasurer, and for taking over the work of the housekeeper, which she manages so nicely, thus relieving the secretary of much work. Generally the monthly meetings were well attended, except during the time of the epidemic, but a fuller attendance on the part of most members would be greatly appreciated and greatly help the office-bearers. One of the most important events of the year was perhaps the lecture of Miss Johnson on diet, which was preceded by courses of home making and dress making, which were greatly appreciated. The two delegates to provincial council, Mesdames Pendegrast and Still, attended as many meeting as possible and reported thereon, while Miss Card attended one meeting in Wellington and reported thereon. A successful dance was held on Labour Day night; whereby the funds were augmented, and earlier in the year the branch assisted the Young Farmers, and entertained a party of visitors. We must offer thanks to Mesdames Carter and McKenna for a-cake donated for competition. Our thanks are also due to all members who have carried out their tea duties so nicely. The branch’s first birthday party was held last year; the fourth year of existence, and the full hall and complimentary comments testified to its success. Outstanding features were the beautiful decorations Miss Zena Tulbury and management of the hall by Mesdames Berger and Pendegrast.
Mrs Wakely, in moving the adoption of the annual report, referred to the good work done by Mrs Still as secretary, and also as head of the Drama Circle.
The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford; president, Mrs E. M. Wakely; vice-presidents, Mrs Archie Clark and Mrs Brandon; secretary, Mrs W.
