CARTERTON
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ MEETING (“Times-Age” Special) The annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers Association was held in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening. The chairman (Mr A. T. Murray) presided and there was a large attendance of ex-service-men.
As a mark of respect to the ex-ser-vicemen who had died since last meeting members stood in silence for a short period.
The annual report was presented by the chairman and covered the activities of the branch over the past year. The balance showed the finances to be in a satisfactory state. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr A. T. Murray; secretary and treasurer, Mr Gibb Johnston; committee, Messrs. L. J. Harding, M. F. King, C. A. Chennells, C. Manley, C. C. Callender, F. Taplin, H. J. Rath-' bone, G. Rabbits (all re-elected). The chairman, secretary and treasurer were accorded a vote of thanks for their services during the year. After supper, Mr J. H. Irving (Masterton), president of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association, gave a very interesting address on a recent visit to Australia. Mr Irving outlined the arrangements for the Anzac Day Parade, and spoke of the excellent work carried out in Australia for the ex-servicemen. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. • PERSONAL. Miss Grace Aplin, of Takaka, South Island, formerly a member of the teaching staff at the Carterton School, was a visitor to the Wairarapa during the weekend. LADIES’ GOLF AFTERNOON. On Saturday afternoon at the Taratahi links the lady members of the Carterton Golf Club assembled to honour Miss K. Campbell, of Clareville, in view of her approaching marriage. A competition over 9 holes was first held, the winner of the “hidden number” being Mrs Kemp Goodin. Afternoon tea was afterwards served in the clubhouse, and during an interval in the proceedings, Mrs Geo. Brown presented Miss Campbell with a chromium plated clock. In doing so Mrs Brown referred in appreciative terms to Miss Campbell’s worth as a club member. She had, over a period of years, been a prominent player, and club captain for a term. Mrs Brown mentioned that Miss Campbell’s fellow players were desirous of her taking away some tangible form' ‘of their affection and esteem. Her remarks were received with applause and musical honours, after which Miss Campbell feelingly replied and expressed her sincere thanks for the goodwill extended to her. BOWLING. The bowling match played on the Carterton green on Saturday between the president’s team (M. Callender) and the vice-president’s team (Mr Robertson) excited keen rivalry and after a splendid afternoon’s play the vice-president’s team won by a good margin. The cost of the afternoon tea was thus met by the captain’s team. DANCE. The Featherston Cricket Club will hold its annual dance in the Anzac Hall next Saturday night. Arrangements for their ever-popular dance are well in hand. PARCEL EVENING.
A most enjoyable time was spent in the South Featherston Hall on Saturday, when a parcel evening was given to Miss G. Simmonds and Mr W. Cherry, whose wedding takes place at Easter, there being about 150 present. The young couple were the recipients of numerous and useful gifts. During the evening dancing and euchre was played. Miss Joan Fenwick and Mr T. Blain were the winners of the Monte Carlo dance, while the following were the card wniners:—Ladies, Mrs G. Burt 1, Mrs Ashworth 2; consolation, Mrs Ericksen; men, Mr A. Gain 1, Mr P. Wilton 2; consolation, Mr A. Crawford. At the conclusion, Mr Arthur Reid, who proved a very capable M.C., thanked those who had helped to make the evening such a success, and on behalf of all wished the happy couple every success. Mr Cherry suitably replied.
