BOWLING

MASTERTON CLUB. FOURS COMPETITION. (By “The Bowler.”) The final for the club fours was played on the Masterton Club’s green on Saturday afternoon last. The finalists were: —J. Watson, Allison, F. Percy and V. Taylor (s); and D. Guild, Vowell, Beecroft and A. Stubbings (s) After an interesting game, Taylor’s team won by a margin of 2 points. The club fours are played over 18 heads.

At the 15th head, when the tea adjournment took place, it looked an easy win for Taylor, as he was 9 up, with only three heads to play. But the uncertainty of bowls proved what an interesting finish can take place. On the 16th head, Stubbings scored 5 points, and folowed this up by putting on 3 points at the 17th head, leaving his team with only one down and one head to play, but in this head Taylor scored a single, thus winning by 2 points. HANDICAP SINGLES. A game for the semi-final of the handicap singles was played on Saturday afternoon last, between V. Gooding (10) and A. Stubbings (s), and resulted in a win for Gooding by two points.

This game proved most interesting, and the exciting finish was witnessed by a large number of bowlers. In the first four heads, Stubbings scored 8 points, while Gooding failed to score, the score board showing: Gooding 8, Stubbings 8. On the 11th head, Gooding was leading by one point, but on the 14th head Stubbings had a lead of 3 points, the scores being: Stubbings 18, Gooding 15. Gooding had obtained a lead of one point on the 20th head, leaving him with 1 up and one head to play. The last head was interesting, and Stubbings played good bowls, but without success.

Gooding laid the shot, and Stubbings narrowly missed the “kitty” with the last three bowls.

It was a well-played game, and the two finalists deserved the applause from the spectators. EASTER TOURNEY.

I would remind bowlers that entries for the tourney to be played on the Masterton Club’s green on Saturday and Monday next, commencing each day at 9 a.m., will close on Wednesday next, at 6 p.m.
