* HAWKE’S BAY TOURNAMENT. HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY. HASTINGS, April 8. The annual yankee tournament of the Hawke’s Bay Polo Club was continued at Hastings to-day. Play was again of first-class standard, and the players are all showing a great improvement in all branches of the game compared with the opening day. All junior games were completed today, and the Masterton B team was successful in winning the J. Lyons Cup for the junior handicap section of the tournament. The O. Nelson Cup, for the junior open section, was won by the Hastings team. The Masterton B team played high-class polo in the final match against Taihape B, showing superior combination. The team is of young men who proved themselves old in experience. To-morrow a series of pony races will be held, and also a sale of ponies. The final polo games will take place in the afternoon. The following are the results of today’s play: — J. Lyons Cup.—Masterton B team (R. Bunny, P. Rishworth, R. Hewitt, R. D. Perry). O. Nelson Cup.—Hastings team (E. W. Symes, F. Mackenzie, D. G. McHardy, T. Robson). Open Events. Senior Grade. —Hawke’s Bay defeated Waipawa, 8-0; Poverty Bay A defeated Poverty Bay B, 5-1; Masterton A defeated Rangitikei, 4-1. Junior Grade. —Taihape A defeated Atua, 6-2; Hastings defeated Waimarama, 12-0; Masterton B defeated Taihape B, 9-0. Handicap Events. Senior Grade. —Waipawa (10) defeated Hawke’s Bay (scr.), 10-8; Poverty Bay B (10) defeated Poverty Bay A (3), 11-8; Masterton A (6) defeated Rangitikei (6), 10-7. Junior Grade. —Taihape A (4) defeated Atua (4), 10-6; Hastings (scr.), drew with Waimarama (12), 12-12; Masterton B (10) defeated Taihape B (12), 19-12.
