OUTBREAK OF FIRE

AT TAR DISTILLING PLANT. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE. AUCKLAND, This Day. The loud explosion of an oil drum, following upon an outbreak of fire at the Auckland Gas Company’s tar distilling plant at Freeman’s Bay, startled residents about three o’clock this morning. The Central and Western Fire Brigades had the outbreak in hand by four o'clock but not before considerable damage had been done to the roof of the distilling plant and condensers. The explosion is attributed to the effect of the fire on the air inside the heavy drum. Glass covering notice boards at some distance was shattered. The amount of damage is not yet estimated.
