ARSON CHARGE
ACCUSED SENT TO GAOL. By Telegraph.—Press Association, CHRISTCHURCH, April 8. Jack Cummings Williams, for arson at Greymouth, was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment by Mr Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court today. Counsel sai.d that Williams had quarrelled with a hotel licensee who leased the hall to which Williams set fire. This was really a drunken escapade.
His Honour said that arson might lead to loss of life and Williams needed severer discipline than that to which he had hitherto been subject. For his own sake and for the protection of the public he would be sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment.
