SHEEP STEALING
FARM MANAGER SENTENCED. ONE YEAR'S IMPRISONMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 8. Sydney Edward Richards, farm manager, aged 49, who pleaded guilty yesterday to three charges of sheepstealing, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment by Mr Justice Johnston this morning. Counsel said the thefts had been undertaken to enable the prisoner to discharge an obligation of £2OO, and the first thefts were the outcome of a grudge against a neighbouring farmer. In pointing out that, the thefts were carried out on three different occasions in three years his Honour said it was quite impossible that Richards should go <cot-free. Others in more pressing circumstances had resisted temptation and none of the excuses submitted seemed sufficient to persuade him that Richards should not go to prison.
