COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF FEATHERSTON COUNCIL. METALLING BACKBLOCK ROADS. The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held yesterday, the chairman, Councillor Q. Donald), presiding. Others present were Councillors R. W. Matthews, L. J. Thompson, G. J. Gillies, lan McLeod, A. B. Martin, J. C. Bidwill, D. Cameron and R. Smith. A letter was received from the Stock Inspector, Department of Agriculture, drawing the attention of the council to the gorse growing on the council reserve and requesting that it be cleared off as soon as possible. The action of the Martinborough Borough Council in supplying water to about twenty-two property owners in the county was confirmed. The Department of Lands and Survey wrote stating, with reference to the deviation of the road at Tuturumuri settlement, that the department’s attitude to the proposal would be forwarded as soon as possible.

The Public Works Department advised that the Main Highways Board had approved of a daily hire rate of £2 14s for the. tar sprayer and 18s for the truck. A further letter from the Public Works Department requested that in future the earliest possible notice be given to the District Telegraph engineer of any proposed highway works that might affect the department’s pole lines. A letter from the Minister of Public Works expressed pleasure at the council’s intention to metal the Wai-nuioru-Summerhill road, a backblock road. As the present estimates of the Public Works Department contain an item of £3OO, £1 for £l, for the metalling of the road, the Minister said there would be no difficulty about issuiAg the necessary authority for the work to proceed as soon as the District Engineer had formally approved of the proposals. It was resolved to close the Western Lake Road to heavy traffic during the winter months.

The Masterton County Council, advised that the council’s share of heavy traffic fees for the quarter ended February 28 amounted to £147 7s'lod, as compared with £ll9 2s 2d for the corresponding period last year. The next meeting of the council will be held on May 13 and the annual meeting will take place on May 25.
