PIRINOA

M.I. ASSOCIATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The weekly social evening of the Mutual Improvement Assn, was held tendance, the president (W. Enoka) presiding. Songs and musical items were given which were greatly appreciated. The opportunity was also taken to farewell Mrs Rosenthal and family, who were valued members of the association. PIRINOA GOLF CLUB.

The following is the draw for a bogey competition to be played to-mor-row. Ladies.' —Mrs McKenzie v. Mrs McLeod, Miss McDougall v Mrs Jones, Mrs Herangi v Mrs Tikao, Mrs Bragg v Miss Tilson, Mrs Carter v Mrs Warren. Men. —J. Rewi v B. McMaster, F. Lovegrove v V. Saunders, S. Hall v T. Flume, D. Tikao v H. Gaudin, S. Thomas v R. McDougall, M. Carter v K. Waiwera, W. Charters v M. McLeod, M. Herangi v J. Carter, G. Munro v D. Jones.

The links are in splendid order and the membership has increased. Several new members have joined the club, and the season promises to be a most successful one. It is the intention of the club to hold a two days’ tournament later in the season, when members from local clubs will be invited to take part. SEA FISHING. Large catches of fish were made at both the Lake Ferry and the Whangamoana Beach at the week-end. One party caught over 100 schnapper besides other varieties of sea fish. LAKE GAUGE.

It is understood that an attempt will be made this week, if conditions are favourable, to open the outlet of the Lake. At present the water has reached the five-feet mark. The sea has been running high for some time with the result that the task of making an outlet will be a difficult one. However, it is to be hoped that conditions will shortly improve, to enable the work to be done. SHOOTING SEASON.

With the approach of the shooting season, sportsmen are keenly anticipating a successful opening. If the Lake is not opened within the next week or so, some shooters will be faced with the difficulty of reaching their respective positions. A repetition of the conditions which prevailed at the closing of last season . will be ..a keen disappointment to many. Ducks and swans are plentiful in the lagoons in this district, and, no doubt, some good bags will be obtained. ROAD IMPROVEMENTS. Tar-sealing of the main and Lower Valley road from the Tuhitarata corner to Burnside church is almost completed. The grading of that part of the road to the Pirinoa Store is proceeding apace, and tar-sealing of this section will be commenced as soon as it is made. PERSONAL. Mr F. Brough and his son, Barry, have left for a week’s holiday at Wanstead, Waipukurau, where they will stay with Mr and Mrs R. Ropiha. Mr and Mrs Symes, Hawera, are staying at the Lake Ferry. Mr Hoare, Christchurch, who has been staying at the Lake Ferry, has returned home.

Mrs Rosenthal and family, who have been staying here for the past three months, have left for their home in Nelson.
