WERAROA ESCAPEES

CHARGES IN PALMERSTON NORTH OFFENCES IN WAIRARAPA AND ELSEWHERE. MAGISTRATE’S SUGGESTION TO DEPARTMENT. PALMERSTON N., This Day. The two boys who escaped from the Weraroa Training Farm on March 31 came before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Children’s Court, faced with 24 charges involving breaking and entering and theft, nine being of car conversion. Several of the cars were seriously damaged. Owing to one boy being under the age of 15, he was ordered to be returned to the farm, but as the other boy is mentally deficient, the Child Welfare Department is to be asked to take steps to send him elsewhere.

The Magistrate suggested to the manager of the farm that he should advise the Department of Justice that more care should be taken in selecting boys sent to the farm. Boys with bad “lists,” who were not likely to remain at the farm and take advantage of the training, should not be sent The matter was becoming a public scandal, said Mr Stout, in referring to the number of escapes which had recently been made from the farm. It was not fair to settlers that this class of boy should be sent there.
