RATANA ACCIDENT

CONDITION OF INJURED. EIGHT IN HOSPITAL. WANGANUI, April 7. Six of the passengers who were injured when the week-end excursion train from Wellington New Plymouth was derailed in a cutting near Ratana early on the morning of March 26 are still inmates of the Wanganui hospital. The driver and fireman, who were rescued from the cab of the over-turn-ed locomotive are also in hospital. So far five patients have been discharged. The hospital authorities reported today that the driver, Mr E. Percival, Wellington, was improving slightly, but the fireman, Mr K. Millar, Wellington, was still in a critical condition and had schown no improvement, A list of the injured in hospital and the condition of each patient tonight is as follows: — Kenneth Millar, Ngaio, fireman of the train, extensive burns all over the body, condition still critical; no change, Edward Percival. Wellington, driver of the train, severe burns on the arms and upper part of the body, condition fair; slight improvement today. Miss Mary Ellis. Wanganui, compound fracture of right leg and wounds to face, fairly comfortable. John Dickson Gardiner, Wellington, broken leg and severe cut above knee, comfortable. Miss Janet Watt, Pahiatua. injury to hip and head, fairly comfortable. Mrs Elsie Battison, Wellington, wound on forehead, condition satisfactory; fairly comfortable. Mrs Eileen Carlyle, Wellington, cuts on head, comfortable. > Mrs Sissy Dutton, Wellington, wound on left forearm, comfortable.
