IN THE GARDEN
HINTS FOR THE AMATEUR. * vegetablesanOlowers. WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Sow winter or prickly spinach, cabbage and cauliflower (early varieties). Sow short varieties of carrots, globe beet and winter turnips. Plant out cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce from earlier sowings. Prepare beds for asparagus to be planted next spring. Give late peas a thorough watering each week while conditions are dry. Sow onions on land worked to a fine tilth; these will be for transplanting later. Clear the old decayed leaves and weeds from around the seakale to allow the crowns to become well ripened. Cut down the tops of asparagus before the seeds fall on the beds. FLOWER GARDEN. Continue the planting of bulbs for spring blooming; tulips can be delayed for, a while yet. Anemones and ranunculus require a well drained position; stagnat moistuie is fatal. Chrysanthemums swelling their buds will need regular feeding. Sow hardy annuals in the open for early summer display. Larkspurs, godetias, clarkias and scabious all make a good display from autumn sown seed. Iceland poppies from the earlier sowings are now ready for planting out in the beds. Sow down new lawns when there is a prospect of a good ram; quick germination will lessen the losses from birds. FRUIT GARDEN. . Unfruitful but vigorous growing fruit trees should have attention to loot pruning during the next month. Gather the fruit as it matures; only sound fruit should be stored. Cut out the old fruiting growths of loganberries and raspberries. Burn the old canes and give the canes left a spraying with Bordeaux mixture 5-5-50. . . Destroy* all the brown rot infected fruit, burning or burying deeply. Keep the runners cut from the strawberry bed.
