BEING WELL GROOMED

THE AVOIDANCE OF SHINY NOSES. No woman can appear well-groomed if her nose is red or shiny. Either condition, once established is difficult to correct. The trouble seems to develop along with gastric and glandular disturbances. The skin of the nose is delicate and the blood vessels, situated close to the surface, easily become enlarged by extremes of heat or cold. Any .variation of the diet that causes irritation to the digestive organs will also send a red flag of distress flying to the nose. „ The mucous membrane ot the nose is often affected by catarrhal complaints which frequently aflect the external appearance of that organ. Cases have also been known where a septic condition of the teeth caused the trouble. The unbecoming flushing may arise from such simple causes as eating too rapidly or drinking with meals. Acne Rosacea, which takes the form of rosy coloured pimples and appears between the ages of 15 and 20, is usually the result of digestive disturbCl The corrective diet consists of simple meals with an abundance of fresh greens and fruit. Water shoud also be taken freely. The local treatment varies. What is quickly effective in one case shows no response in another. The daily use of a sulphur soap followed by a medicated calamine lotion is recommended. The oily condition is caused through over activity of the numerous sebaceous glands about the fleshy area of the nose. This condition can be improved by attention to the diet, reducing the intake of fatty foods, and local treatment. Massage with the thumb and two fingers using a gentle, squeezing movement is advised, but care must be taken not to punch and squeeze the skin. Oils or creams should never be used for cleansing, but the skin may be scrubbed lightly with either a tar or sulphur soap if it is not sensitive. A soft, loose brush, which should be sterilised daily, is good for applying the soap. Hot compresses, provided they are not too hot, will stimulate the circulation. After their use a cooling lotion should be applied. Alternate hot and cold applications have a tonic effect on the oil glands. If a soothing application is needed it should take the form of an almond lotion or complexion milk. The heavy textured skin can. stand a fairly strong astringent but once a string one has been used it will always be necessary, so it is wise to see what can be done with one of the milder skin tonics. An od-time remedy, which has a drying action on the skin and also acts as a fixative for the powder, is a lotion of glycerine and rosewater with a little alum added. Calamine lotion is found effective as a lasting powder base for some oily skins —it should match the skin tone, be applied sparingly and be allowed to dry before the powder is used. Some effective non-shine preparations are now available at the better cosmetic counters. A powder specially textured for oily skins is also available. One of the new toning masks of the astringent type used once a week will give amazing results.
