IRON ORE DEPOSITS
SITE FOR SMELTING WORKS. ONEKAKA FAVOURED, NELSON, April 7. A motion supporting the establishment of smelting works in connection with the development of. iron ore deposits in Golden Bay was unanimously carried at a meeting of representatives of every local body in the Nelson district.
The Mayor of Nelson, Mr G. L. Page, pointed out that there was some talk of the smelting works being moved from Onekaka. He had been told by the Minister of Industries and Commerce that the works should be at Onekaka. However, the speaker was afraid some efforts might be made by other centres to get the works established away from Onekaka. Golden Bay contained lime-stone, manganese and coal, all of which were necessary for the production of steel. The immediate vicinity of Onekaka provided a suitable place for the establishment of a large community with a fine water supply and electricity for power and domestic use. These remarks were strongly supported by other speakers.
