His friends will be glad to know he is progressing as well as can be expected. Mrs N. F. Hornsby and Miss P. Telford, of Carterton, left on a motoring tour yesterday en route for Gisborne, where they will be the guests of their brother, Mr Hugh Telford. They will afterwards visit the Te Puia Springs district. OLD ESTABLISHED BUSINESSES. In connection with old established organisations in Carterton, the record as far as businesses is concerned, is probably held by the well-known timber firm of W. Booth and Co,, Ltd., ,who actually started as W. Booth and Company in 1873 —65 years ago. In 1908 the firm was formed into a larger company and the name was then changed to W. Booth and Co., Ltd., and-has continued under the same name to present day. A firm that has traded under the same name and in the same premises for almost as long, is that of Whyte and Co., bakers, as the -business was established in 1876 by the late Mr A. L. Whyte who was then resident in Masterton. Representations were, however, made to Mr Whyte to open in Carterton and the enterprise has continued for 62 years.
Another very old established business that has continued under the same name is, Dellers Meat Mart, which was established in 1880 by the late Mr G. W. Deller. The latter was well-known in public life in the town, and was mayor for an extended term, besides having taken a prominent part in the administration of the P. and A. Society, Carterton Racing ''Club, Taratahi-Carterton Road Board, Carterton School Committee, etc. SUMMER SPORT.
With the continued favourable weather summer sports are being played with vigour. A break in the can usually be anticipated after Easter, and then cricket bats, tennis racquets, and bowls will be put away for the winter. .As far as Carterton is concerned there are numbers of winter sports to be indulged in, including Rugby football, Association football, and hockey, for both men and girls. There is also basketball for girls, and badminton is now a favourite indoor winter amusement.
