MANAWATU TROTS. GOVERNMENT TAXATION. PALMERSTON NORTH, April 6. The Manawatu Trotting Club showed a decrease on its totalisator investments for its autumn meeting at Awapuni on Saturday, but £1139 9s Cd will be paid into the Treasury, the amount being £147 16s 3d less than the £1287 5s 9d paid 12 months ago. Details of the taxes are as follows:— Totalisator tax, £526 16s; dividend tax, £576; stakes tax, £l4; amusement tax, £22 13s 6d; total, £1139 9s 6d. The gate takings for the day amounted to £260 9s 6d, compared with £336 last year.
Raceline continues to race unluckily and will have his opportunity to make amends at the Whangarei meeting. He scored his first and only victory at the last Whangarei meeting and it will be interesting to note how he shapes on this occasion. The class in the Maungatapere Handicap is not strong and with 7.6 he is handily situated in the handicap..
Lady Ina’s form at Hawke’s Bay did not impress for an Easter Handicap prospect, but it is -understood she is certain to go to Riccarton.
For the first time this season Balmenter found a track at Waimate on Saturday with the sting out of the going, and scored the easiest win during the afternoon. Should he strike similar going at Riverton it will be difficult to select anything to beat him.
Lowenberg, winner of the principal race at Stratford on Saturday, is engaged at the C.J.C. Easter meeting, and it is the intention of his connexions to make the trip. Lowenberg is looking particularly well, and while he did not have much to spare at the finish of Saturday’s race he had 9.0 up, and it could be regarded as a satisfactory trial for Easter. No rider has been engaged for him at Riccarton, but overtures are to be made to P. Atkins to fly from Auckland and ride him in the Great Autumn Handicap.
Francis Drake has not won out of ■his turn, as he has been finishing up close in good company since winning in the early part of the season.. Last season he was in line as one of the best two-year-olds of the year when he won five times and was placed three times out of 10 starts. A cold broke on him when running in the Challenge Stakes at Trentham, where he collapsed after leading into the straight.
The brood mare Lady Fingers, owned by Mr. William Douglas, was sold yesterday to Mr. Alex. Southey, of Eketahuna, by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd.
