ROAD CYCLEING
MASTERTON CLUB. NOTES ON SATURDAY'S RACE. (By “Green and Black.”) The winner of Saturday's event. J. McAliece. rode a fine race which is a reward for hard training. The surprise of the opening day was the performance of M. Gfaham, a very young rider, who pushed the winner to a length. Well done, Maurice.
B. Harman rode well to gain third place, and with more training should be further up in future events. R. Copp performed well for his first ride, and as the season advances he should improve considerably. E. Lefort, B. Dooling, J. Duckett and J. Brader all rode well, and showed consideable promise. They should soon be on the winning list. S. Brannigan went well for three Japs, but lack of training told over the last lap. B. Deane was riding well until his tire came off and put him out of the race. Deane who has been off the track during the last two seasons showed improved form on Saturday. Pat Condon, who has not given much attention to training, rode a fine race, and will be one of the best riders in the district if he decides to go in seriously for the sport.
A. Morris rode his best race to date and deserved the cup he won. As he is the only Carterton cyclist, he trains by himself and this is a credit to him that he is so enthusiastic that he participates in the sport. G. Little, who has been riding during the last few seasons in Manawatu and Auckland, should keep competitors moving when he strikes form. C. Dykes rode well to get second fastest time. He finished last and received the “wooden spoon,” a trophy the last rider receives each week. Len Clark is the keenest rider in the club. He comes from Featherston every week to help the sport along. During the last four seasons he has only missed about two rides which is a very creditable performance. He has competed in several big races but machine trouble and bad luck has kept him out of a place. Still he always comes up smiling for the next race.
Next week’s race will be to Te Whiti and back. The race will start at 2.15 p.m. sharp from Messrs Fly and Young’s corner. The distance is 16 miles.
