WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION • ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Hockey Association, was held in the P. and A. rooms, Carterton, last evening, the president, Mr. G. Hayne, presiding over a good attendance of delegates.
A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr D. Burgess, the members standing in silence. Mr Burgess was secretary of the Wairarapa Hockey Association for several years, during which time he did yeoman service for the sport in the Wairarapa, and his loss is a severe blow to the game in this district.
The annual report, as previously published, was read and adopted. The balance sheet, was also adopted and showed that the Association had had a very successful season, and completed the year with a small credit balance, which was very satisfactory.
The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr W. J. Fisher; president, Mr G. Hayne; vice-presidents, Messrs. C. N. Cole, F. C. Bunny, L. S. Nicol, E. W. Tooley, D. A. Pickering; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. S. Moor; recording secretary, Mr G. Maloney; hon auditor, Mr E. R. Rogers; delegate to New Zealand Hockey Association, Mr. E. W. Richmond (Christchurch); management committee, Messrs C. Knutson, M. Worsfold, G. Maloney, R. Foster and G. Fisher; postponement committee. Messrs S. Fisher (Carterton), R. Foster (Masterton), A. Harp (Greytown); fixtures committee, Messrs R. Foster and secretary. It was decided to open the season for both grades on April 30. Nominations of teams will close on April 23. It was decided to again hold the five-a-side tournament on the King’s Birthday holiday, June 9. A recommendation that the tournament committee should consider having three grades (namely senior, junior and third grade) was adopted. The third grade is to be made an age limit section. The tournament committee is as follows:— Messrs. C. N. Cole, R. S. Moor. E. W. Tooby, R. Foster and D. A. Pickering. The Kiwi Club was granted permission to play in green shirts and socks, in place of the red and white.
The association had applied for a match with the visiting Indian tourists, and it is hoped that this visit will increase the popularity of the game in the district. So far a definite date for the match has not yet been received from the New Zealand Association, and when this is finalised the Association will request the Wairarapa Rugby Union and the business people of Masterton to co-operate with the Association to make the visit a success.
