ACCIDENT NEAR PONGAROA. CAR CRASHES OVER BANK. PAHIATUA, April' 4. A car driven by P. Udy, labourer, Tiraum'ea. crashed over a hundred feet bank at nine o'clock on Sunday night about three miles from Pongaroa. It is understood that the accident was caused by the car striking a culvert in a water-table into which the vehicle had inadvertently been driven. The car slewed across the road and careered down a slope. The driver jumped clear, but a passenger, J. Kinivan, employed as a roadman by the Eketahuna County Council. was thrown into a creek, from which he was extricated by Mr Udy. The latter managed to regain the road and sought assistance. Two hours later, Mr Kinivan was brought into hospital in Pongaroa. Later an ambulance summoned from Pahiatua took both men to the Pahiatua Hospital. Mr Kinivan is understood to have sustained a fracture of the spine. Mr Udy’s injuries are believed to be internal.
