MARTINBOROUGH
SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held last evening. Present were Messrs B. G. Wallis (chair), Lawrence, E. R. Burch, Cotter, W. B. Martin, A. Brimble (secretary), and the headmaster, Mr G. S. Simpson.
Correspondence received from the Education Board dealt with improvements to the school house, and the erection of lavatories and bicycle sheds neat the Secondary Department, which work will be carried out as soon as possible. A visit from Mr E. Dyer, chairman of the board, is expected at an early date, when he will report on the prospects of an additional class room and a more effective heating system for the High School. One typewriter was allotted by the board for use in the Secondary Department. A letter was received from the Home and School Association referring to the capable and enthusiastic way in which Mr Simpson conducted the school sports in February. Accounts amounting to £l2 4s 8d were passed for payment. The visiting committee reported on the dangerous state of the asphalt area. —Resolved to have area patched before commencement of basketball season.
The headmaster reported attendance as follows: —Primary roll 205, average 193.5; secondary, roll 45, average, 44.1. Miss O. Lenz has been appointed to the permanent staff in the Secondary Department, and Miss Patterson has been transferred from secondary to primary, relieving. At the conclusion of his report Mr Simpson expressed his gratitude to the committee for their support and help ' during his short term as headmaster. The meeting of householders will be held on Monday, May 2.
BOWLING. A very successful tournament was held on the local bowling green on Monday night. The whole of the green was taken up, visiting bowlers from Featherston, Carterton and Masterton participating. A most enjoyable time was spent. Five skips tied with three wins each but Mr Yates won on points. Two leads tied with four wins, but Mr Fuge (Featherston) won on points. DOG TRIALS. Entries for the annual Dog Trials, to be held on Thursday and Friday, closed last evening. It' is expected the meeting will be a large and competitive one. PERSONALS.
Mr Chas. Gair has returned from a holiday in the far south. Miss Twentyman, a South Islander, commences duties here next week as Plunket Nurse.
