LONG GOLF MATCH

CONTEST OVER SIXTEEN YEARS. LONDON, March 5. One of the longest golf matches on record has just been terminated by death. It began in 1922 and at the close the scores were:—George New, 86,379 strokes; , W. R. Chamberlain, 88,016 strokes.

The match was played on the nineholes course at Littlecote, Wiltshire, by two veterans of Chilton Foliat, near Swindon—Mr New, the postmaster, and Mr Chamberlain, farmer. Death has interrupted the marathon. And it was the winner, Mr New —1637 up on strokes, 479 up on holes—who died this week. It was arranged 16 years ago that only death of physical infirmity should end the match. The veterans met every Thursday. The winner each week entertained the loser "to tea. They played 7326 holes and went round 814 times.
