HIGHER COSTS.
EFFECT OF LEGISLATION. COUNTRY'S INCREASED BURDEN. An indication that, following the increase in rales in Franklin County this financial year, from 1 7-8 d in the pound to 2.1-Bd, there would be a further increase in the coming financial year, was made at a meeting of the Franklin County Council. The subject was raised on receipt of a circular letter from the New Zealand Farmers’ Union inquiring what was the actual effect on rates of recent legislation, and what was the relief to rates, if any, through the taking over by the Main Highways Board of main arterial roads as State highways.
