■LABOURER SENT TO GAOL. PALMERSTON N., April 1. Said to have been before the court 15 times for theft and eight times for false pretences, Henry Barrett, labourer, aged 41, was. sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court today on a charge of stealing a felt hat valued at 35/-. Senior-Sergeant J. Mclntyre said Barrett, who was on sustenance, came to Palmerston North from Wellington on Tuesday, and after calling at the police station was given an order for obtaining lodgings. While at the boarding- house he stole a hat from another lodger. “Barrett has been drinking since he has been here, though I don’t know where he got the money from,” said Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre. “When arrested he was considerably under the influence of liquor.
